Where to take the ferry to the island of Ischia

Many naval units connect Naples and Pozzuoli daily to the ports of Ischia; opportunities increase during the tourist season.

Maritime transport to Ischia

Ferries to the island of Ischia can be taken from the port of Naples, in particular from Calata Porta di Massa or from the port of Pozzuoli, where departing rides are more frequent and it’s probably more convenient for those leaving by car. The fast boats (hydrofoils and catamarans, on which it is not possible to embark with vehicles in tow), however, depart from the Molo Beverello of the Neapolitan maritime station. The landing of the ferries can take place exclusively in two of the six municipalities present, in Ischia Porto or at the port of Casamicciola. In fact in the port of Forio only fast vehicles can disembark; in the remaining municipalities there are no ports that can receive public transport carriers. In addition to all the annual races on the Naples and Pozzuoli – Ischia island routes there are further possibilities during the summer season, thanks to departures from Capri, Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast and Salerno.

Departures from the port of Naples

There are two shipping companies that operate on the Naples – Ischia Porto routeAlilauro with hydrofoils and Caremar also with ferries. The latter depart daily from Calata Porta di Massa to get to Ischia in about an hour and a half, but almost all the trips make a stopover in Procida taking ten minutes more. From Molo Beverello, in front of the Maschio Angioino, a few hundred meters away from Porta di Massa (which can also be reached by a special free shuttle), the fast boats, both Caremar which take an hour and five minutes (this company operates through all types of naval units also on the route Procida – Ischia Porto), and Alilauro which reach Ischia without stopping, in fifty minutes. Even if there are fewer rides it may be useful to travel on the Naples – Casamicciola route: it leaves from the Beverello terminal with Snav hydrofoils which arrive at their destination in an hour, also making a stopover in Procida; or, from Calata Porta di Massa with the Caremar ferry which arrives in an hour and a quarter. Instead five runs a day of the Alilauro fast boats, which three also on holidays, proceeding to the port of Forio after landing in Ischia Porto arriving in seventy-five minutes overall.

Departures from the port of Pozzuoli

On the Pozzuoli – Ischia Porto route the offer of ferries becomes much richer and it is recommended when traveling with a vehicle in tow, thanks to the fact that the carriers Caremar, Medmar and Gestour, without making intermediate stopovers, moor at the main island port not even twenty kilometers away, in just an hour. Reaching the port of Pozzuoli by car is also quite simple (from the highway you have to take the Naples ring road and then exit at Via Campana) while it would be a problem for those on foot not being well connected with the airport and the railway station of Naples. Caremar and Medmar also operate on the Pozzuoli – Casamicciola section, through dedicated lines, with fewer runs per day but which are completed in the same amount of time.

Seasonal departures

From April to October, with one departure a day from the port of Capri, as well as from the port of Sorrento, you can travel the Capri – Ischia Porto and Sorrento – Ischia Porto routes thanks to the Alilauro Gruson hydrofoils. During the same months the Alicost fast vehicles depart from the port of Salerno to make the Salerno – Ischia route, from the port of Amalfi to make the Amalfi – Ischia one and from the port of Positano to cross the Positano – Ischia route. From July to September Snav hydrofoils, through the rides on the Ponza – Casamicciola and Ventotene – Casamicciola routes, connect the Pontine islands with the second most important port of Ischia
