How to reach the island of Elba

All traditional and alternative ways to get to Elba from the mainland and the islands.

Sea transport Piombino – Elba

To reach the island of Elba from the mainland the port of departure is Piombino (province of Livorno, Tuscany), precisely Piazzale Premuda, which connects the three ports of Elba:

  • the port of Cavo, the closest to the mainland, for which the hydrofoil takes only a quarter of an hour and the ferry forty minutes;
  • the port of Rio Marina, to which only ferries operate, which take three quarters of an hour;
  • the port of Portoferraio (the most important one), also the capital of the island, with the landing place that is reached in forty minutes with the Toremar hydrofoils and in an hour with the ferries of the same company or with those of Moby and Blu Navy.

Race information

Below you will find more detailed information and timetables of all the routes on the routes to Elba :

Internal navigation

Given the considerable size of the island there is also an internal route that connects the ports of Cavo and Portoferraio in twenty minutes by hydrofoil.

Alternatives to reach the island

If from Piombino we went first to the island of Pianosa, another island of the Tuscan Archipelago, during the summer there is the possibility of going to Elba thanks to the Pianosa – Rio Marina connection. Furthermore Portoferraio can be reached by sea from Corsica, with Corsica Ferries – Sardinia Ferries from the Port of Bastia. Another alternative is the direct landing at the Elban airport of Marina di Campo. But we’ll explain why it is better to travel by ship instead of by plane.
