How to reach the Pelagie Islands by sea

In addition to the ferry rides from the island of Sicily to the Pelagie Islands, hydrofoil rides are available in the summer.

How to get to Lampedusa and Linosa by sea transport

The Sicilian archipelago of the Pelagie, the one located further south in Italy, is made up of the islands of Lampedusa and Linosa, the uninhabited islets of Lampione and Rabbit and the rock of Sacramento. Opposite the small Rabbit island, in the “Lampedusa Island Oriented Nature Reserve”, there is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, accessible by reservation only. To reach these territories by sea, which administratively coincide with the municipality of Lampedusa and Linosa of the free municipal consortium of Agrigento, there are sea transports with the departures of ferries and hydrofoils from Porto Empedocle (a few kilometers away from Agrigento).

Ferries to Linosa and Lampedusa

Porto Empedocle and Pelagie Islands

During the summer season, the ferries of the fleet of the Siremar company depart from the port of Porto Empedocle to arrive first at the port of Linosa after almost eight hours (intermediate stop with a stay of fifteen minutes), and then at the port of Lampedusa after another two hours and a quarter of navigation, to then complete the backward route. The same ship can therefore also be used to move between the two inhabited islands of the archipelago. The accommodation on board can be that of the “Deck passage” or the cabin (single, double, triple or quadruple, internal or external). Through the shipping company Caronte & Tourist Isole Minori, these routes are also operated during the rest of the year.

In Lampedusa it is possible to touch the ground with a vehicle in tow, while in Linosa, usually from June to October, there is a ban on the influx of cars, motorcycles and mopeds.

In the summer, the hydrofoils (fast means of transport which exclusively carry passengers without vehicles) of the Liberty Lines leave their moorings from Porto Empedocle once a day to disembark in Linosa after three hours. After a stop of a quarter of an hour, they leave for Lampedusa where arrive after a further hour of navigation. In the summer, as well as in other periods of the year, the same company also makes other departures with fast boats that connect, however, only the two islands, without connections with the island of Sicily.

The days and times of the connections Porto Empedocle – Linosa (the distance between the two locations is about 90 nautical miles) and Porto Empedocle – Lampedusa (the length of the route is 110 nautical miles) can be viewed by clicking on the links above, and from the pages where you are referred there are also prices, first and last races and other information.
