Santorini

According to many the most beautiful island in the Aegean, Santorini should be visited at least once in a lifetime. The largest and southernmost of the Cyclades islands attracts for the balance between tourist modernity and the traditional lifestyle of its inhabitants.

A compromise that over the years has allowed Santorini to obtain an autonomous space in the tourist imagination of Greece. A romantic imaginary, where the days pass between a swim in the sea (or in the pool), the view of a sunset, an excursion and a dinner (or lunch) in one of the many typical restaurants of Fira, Oia and the other villages of the island.

The compromise between modernity and antiquity also passes through the possibility of alternating a day of shopping (for those who can) around the exclusive boutiques of the island and a visit to the archaeological site of Akrotiri, second in importance only to the island of Delos (with reference to the Aegean).

Special mention also for architecture and agriculture. Even in these areas, in fact, Santorini partially escapes the stereotypes generally associated with Greece. The architecture is similar to that of Mykonos: white houses, blue domed roofs, additions, churches, alleys, ascents and descents, but with a difference. Here the vertical development of part of the territory, from the sea to the edge of the caldera (Santorini is a volcanic island), creates a landscape that is unique in the world.

As for agriculture, there's no trace of olive trees on Santorini. The main crop of the island is the vine (the vine is called Assyrtiko). The wine of Santorini is called VinSanto but, apart from the name, there's no analogy with the more famous Tuscan wine. In the case of Santorini the name simply refers to the locality.
