Elba, conferences and tastings: “Fishing and fishermen in the lands of the Etruscans”

From 14 April to 12 May 2023, every Friday, the five maritime municipalities of Elba will host a series of events focused on knowledge and protection of the sea, fishing trades, local culture and food and wine traditions.

The series of events, called “Fishing with taste. Fishing and fishermen in the lands of the Etruscans”, is organized by the Elba Island Foundation and the San Leopoldo Cooperative and it is part of a broader effort by the Cittadella della Pesca cooperative society to develop the local participatory strategy of the Costa degli Etruschi Flag, a coastal action group operating in the fisheries and aquaculture sector in Tuscany. The aim is to underline the importance of local fish products, the short supply chain, traditions and the relationship between professional fishing and sea protection.

The public will have the opportunity to discuss, receive information and participate in activities relating to professional fishing and fish products, aimed at citizens, professionals, schools and tourists. The debates will cover topics such as the history of fishing, the various fishing techniques, processing, cooking and consumption of fish, new fishing methods, fish products, seasonality, lesser-known fish species and the relationship between fishing and marine environment.

In addition, local fishermen will carry out show cooking based on the local fish and agri-food supply chain, with tastings for conference participants offered by companies of the island of Elba.
