Ferries and Green Pass: when it is mandatory

The Green Pass is no longer mandatory for traveling by ferry and hydrofoil in Italy, but it is still necessary to wear an FFP2 mask.

Important update

From 1 May 2022 the Green Pass is no longer necessary on public transport in Italy, while it is necessary for travel abroad (each State can have its own specific legislation). Also the Passenger Locator Form is no longer mandatory for Italy. FFP2 masks are still mandatory on ferries as on all Italian public transport.

From 1 April 2022, with the Italian Reopening Decree, there are substantial changes regarding the Green Pass: on local public transport, including ferries and hydrofoils that run short-distance routes, it will no longer be necessary, while for long distance routes, the basic one is required (the tampon is also valid), but only until April 30, after which it will no longer be requested in any case. Regarding the FFP2 masks, they are still indispensable on all italian means of transport.

Green Certification, also known as Green Pass, is required on public transport as ferries and hydrofoils on national italian routes to and from the islands. This means that the swab, which is a negative result from a rapid or molecular antigen test, is no longer now valid. Access to maritime means of transport (but also air and land) and their use, for travel to and from the islands with the rest of the Italian territory, is also allowed to subjects in possession of one of the COVID-19 green certifications from vaccination, healing or testing, or the so-called basic Green Pass. You must be in possession of the certificate with one of the following:

  • Anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination occurred, at the end of the primary vaccination course or administration of the relative booster dose.
  • Cured from COVID-19, with simultaneous termination of the prescribed isolation following SARS-CoV-2 infection.
  • Recovery from COVID-19 occurred after administration of the first dose of vaccine or at the end of the primary vaccination course or administration of the booster dose.
  • Carrying out rapid or molecular antigen tests, the latter also on salivary samples and in compliance with the criteria established in the circular of the Ministry of Health, with negative results for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Individuals under the age of twelve and those exempt from the vaccination campaign are exempt.

For travel between states within the European Union, starting from February 1, 2022, the Green Pass Base is sufficient. In the case of a swab, the antigenic one is no longer valid 48 but 24 hours. However, since the conditions may vary depending on the country of destination, it is always advisable to check the measures in force on the website at https://reopen.europa.eu/it

Mandatory

As of May 1, 2022, the Green Pass is no longer required on ferries and hydrofoils.

On the ferries of regional routes, in Italy, with the regulatory update dictated by the decree law of November 26, 2021, it is no longer sufficient to comply only with the anti-contagion measures (mask, distance, hand washing). In fact, the famous Green Pass, from 6 December 2021, was mandatory not only for interregional maritime connections (between Italian regions) but also for regional connections. As well as, as before, for the outward and return journeys, by sea (and not only), between states in the European Union (each state has its own legislation). To standardize the EU member countries, the designation of the European digital COVID certificate was created which, in Italy, is called COVID-19 green certification (when we talk about the Green Pass we refer to these certifications). Since it can also be obtained with the first dose of the vaccine (even if not single-dose), it may not always be valid for travel to Europe. In this case it is valid only as long as it certifies the completion of the vaccination cycle. Alternatively, a negative result can be attested to a molecular or antigenic test, or recovery from Covid. Unlike maritime transport between EU Member States, Green Certification is always valid for national routes between different regions, even after only a first dose of vaccine.

Exemptions

The green certificate is never required from children under 12 years old, excluded by age from the vaccination campaign, nor from subjects exempt for health reasons from vaccination on the basis of specific medical certification. For entry into the national territory, children under the age of six are exempted from carrying out the molecular or antigen test. For trips outside Italy, the limits are established by the individual countries and are subject to variations according to the epidemiological situation.

How to get COVID-19 green certification

The Green Pass can therefore be obtained in the following ways:

  • 15 days after the vaccine (even after a single dose).
  • After the completion of the vaccination course.
  • After doing the additional dose on the first vaccination course.
  • After healing from Covid-19 (valid for 6 months from the disappearance of the positivity).
  • After testing negative for a molecular swab within the past 72 hours or rapid antigenic within the preceding 24 hours (from 1 February 2022 no more 48 hours as before).

Having satisfied one of the previous requirements, it is released (in digital and printable format, accompanied by a QR Code with the essential information that can be shown at the controls) via the website at https://www.dgc.gov.it / web , through the Electronic Health Record, through the App (Immune or IO), through the AUTHCODE recovery or with the help of general practitioners, pediatricians and pharmacies.
